7 Things That Adipurush Has Copied From The West

Ever since the release of Adipurush, the retelling of the Indian epic mythology, Ramayana, it has been a meme fest on Twitter. This Rs 500 crore budgeted movie has let down the expectations of the fans way more than expected. After facing massive backlash from the public since the teaser release, they edited the whole thing before the trailer release but seems like very little changed on the VFX front.
The box-office numbers of Adipurush are seeing a rapid plummet with each passing day. The unnecessary cringe dialogues and scenes which were too Westernized to have any mythological connotations have got the fans protesting and demanding changes.
Netizens are pointing out that Yugo Sako’s adaptation of the Ramayana in their 1992 anime classic Ramayan: The Legend of Prince Ram gave us a more accurate depiction than Om Raut’s Adipurush.
Here is everything that appeared to be a cheap knock-off of fantasy Western movies:
1. Lanka appeared to be the blackened version of Asgard from the MCU
As per the original material of the Indian epic, Lanka is known to be a kingdom famous for its gold and riches. Surprisingly in Adipurush, it has been depicted with monochrome tones of granite with dark skies over it. On Twitter, Raavan’s kingdom of Lanka is getting compared to the MCU depiction of Asgard which is the kingdom of Thor’s father, Odin. The design looks uncanny, just a grim and blackened version of Asgard.
2. Cheap copies of Death Eaters and Dementors were spotted in Adipurush
The film opens with a hooded figure having a skull face and carrying a scythe which reminded the netizens of poorly animated versions of Death Eaters from Voldemort’s army in the Harry Potter Universe. In fact, later on, this Grim Reaper knock-off sends an army of wraiths that lowkey looked like the soul-sucking creatures of Azkaban, Dementors, of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
3. Apparently, Raavan shares Targaryen blood too
Raavan flying a demon bat looking similar to a gargoyle was something that none of us saw coming. According to the Indian epic, Raavan escapes with Sita on his chariot known as Pushpak Viman. Never would have anyone imagined Raavan flying a bat like the Targaryens as seen with dragons in the Game of Thrones and House of Dragons.
4. Sugreev had an uncanny resemblance with Ceaser from The Planet of the Apes
The VFX team of Adipurush did a huge blunder with the Vaanar Sena in the movie. The army of apes is getting compared with King Kong and its likes due to the large number of chimpanzees and gorillas shown in the movie instead of the normal Indian monkeys that we occasionally come across. Sugreev, the ape king in Adipurush looked like the photocopy of the rebellious ape Ceasar from The Planet of the Apes franchise.
In a scene in Adipurush, Ram is seen smearing blood as tilak on Sugreev’s forehead and the character looked all the more like Ceaser when he was seen smearing war paint on himself in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
5. Raavan’s army was full of orcs from The Lord of the Rings
Raavan’s army is supposed to be made of asuras but instead, the asuras looked like poorly executed CGI orcs as seen in The Lord of the Rings franchise. Netizens are highly disappointed that the asuras didn’t look like asuras at all and more like orcs from the famous video game, World of Warcraft and its movie adaptation.
6. Is Raavan’s son The Flash?
According to the mythology, Raavan’s son, Indrajit, has been portrayed as a mystical being but Om Raut’s adaptation turned him into a speedster much like the character of Flash in the DC universe. Flash runs at lightning speed and Indrajit was portrayed quite the same in Adipurush. In fact, Indrajit can also be compared to Wanda’s brother, Quicksilver, in the MCU universe sharing almost the same qualities.

7. Lord Hanuman is also an Attack on Titan fan
When Lord Hanuman first meets Sita at Ashok Vatika, Raavan’s forest, he could have greeted her with folded hands. Instead, in Adipurush, he was seen doing some weird hand gestures quite similar to the anime, Attack on Titan survey corps’ famous Shinzou wa Sasageyo salute pose.
In an interview with ANI, Adipurush dialogue writer, Manoj Muntashir, revealed that he is sad watching children growing up in an era of Marvel and DC movies and wanted to introduce them to “true heroes of Sanatan” but looks like hypocrisy shined through instead.
