We have grown up watching cartoons on our TV screens. We used to find it, funny and innocent but there are a few cartoons that were banned in some countries for being too controversial. If you are not aware of it then read on.
1. An episode of Peppa Pig was banned throughout Australia
In an episode, people were taught to be friends with spider and bugs. However, in a country like Australia, which is home to 10,000 species of spiders (some highly poisonous), it was very dangerous. Thus, it was banned.
2. Episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants were banned in more than 120 countries
Some episodes of this cartoon were banned in over 120 countries including the USA, Europe, China, Russia, Australia for showcasing violence and using foul language. Moreover, an episode was taken off air in which Squidward contemplates suicide.
3. Few episodes of Tom and Jerry were taken off across the world
People thought that many episodes of this show were controversial because it justified unpunished violence. In some episodes, cartoons were also seen smoking, drinking and doing things that were not suitable for kids.
4. An episode from the Tiny Toon Adventures was banned throughout the world
In one episode named ‘One beer’, the cartoons were seen trying to steal a beer bottle. Characters consuming alcohol is not suitable for kids and hence the episode was taken off the air.
5. Shrek 2 was banned in Israel
Israel banned the cartoon for making fun of public figures and also giving sexual hint. In of the episodes, the characters say ‘to bobbit’, indicating that they want to cut off a character’s biological organs. While dubbing, the authors replace it with a popular Israeli singer, who is famous for his high voice. The joke didn’t go down well with the singer, David D’Or, who also sued the cartoon’s authors.
6. Shin Chan was banned in India
The cartoon aired in India in 2006 and was banned in 2008 for promoting mischievous behaviour. Shin chan’s behaviour towards adults was disturbing for people and thus, they demanded to ban it.
7. China banned popular cartoon show Winnie The Pooh
The cartoon was taken off air in July 2017 after the memes comparing cartoon with Chinese President Xi Jinping surfaced on the internet. The government was against any kind of mockery against the leader as a result of which pooh images were also blocked on the internet.
8. One of the Pokemon episode was banned on TV in Turkey, Japan and the Arab League
In one of the episodes, there was an explosion that had bright blue and red flashes with a frequency of 12 Hz. Many kids complaint about their health and some even experienced partial vision loss and loss of consciousness. It was also said that 600 kids were hospitalized. Later, the whole incident was known as ‘Pokemon Shock’. The cartoon was banned in Japan, Turkey and the Arab League.
9. Kenya and many middle east countries banned Steven Universe
In 2017, Steven Universe was banned from Kenya’s Film Classification Board for being ‘pro gay’. Defending the action, KFCB said in a statement the shows “are intended to introduce children to deviant behaviour.”.
10. Cow and Chicken banned in India
The show was banned in India because it showed cows at the receiving end of violence. In the county, cows are worshipped and thus, the cartoon was found insulting. Along with it, there were some grossed-out jokes or sexual innuendoes which were problematic.
