Delhi government has made an announcement that it will now permit home delivery of liquor with the help of a respective website or app for it. The people who own an L-13 licence will be allowed to deliver both Indian as well as foreign liquor at homes. They are also allowed to deliver these liquor bottles with the help of any mobile app or through online portals. An official said
“Only a particular kind of license holder will be allowed to home deliver liquor. In Delhi, we have now allowed home delivery of liquor only to L-13 license holders.”
The government has not yet concluded how to do so. And apps like Swiggy, Amazon and Zomato have not issued any statements.
Liquor home delivery was started because of COVID lockdowns last year. In May 2020, the Supreme Court suggested that states should consider an indirect sale and home delivery of alcohol to restrict COVID-19 spread. Companies like Amazon, Swiggy, and Zomato started home delivery of alcohol to their customers during last year’s lockdown.
The clear answer to this would be no, not everyone will be allowed to easily grab a bottle like we order a sandwich from a food delivery app. The person placing the order will be required to submit some kind of identity to establish the point that they are in the legal drinking age group. According to the notification given by the government, the licensee will deliver alcohol at the buyers’ residences only if the orders are received through an app or a web portal.
Where can you place an online order for alcohol in Delhi?
For now, the Delhi government has not put forward any online portals or apps through which people will be able to do so. Although, we can expect apps such as Swiggy, Zomato and Amazon to interfere in here and present some kind of a solution.
Something like this was initiated at the last year’s national lockdown. During that time, few states established their respective portals for online order of liquor while some permitted Amazon, Swiggy and Zomato to deliver the alcohol bottles at home.
