Here’s Why The Hindi Film Industry Is Called Bollywood
Have you ever wondered why Bollywood is called Bollywood?
In today’s world, the Hindi film industry is commonly known as Bollywood across the globe, but who coined the term Bollywood? Has it been called that since the beginning?
Origin of the term Bollywood
In 1910, India’s first-ever motion picture film was released by Dadasaheb Phalke. Then over the years, we have seen several great people contribute to the growth of the Indian film industry.
In earlier decades, the movies used to be more focused on social issues. However, following the end of the British Raj in India, as the Indian film industry says parallel cinema emerged. It co-existed along with the commercial Hindi films.
With years passing by, Hindi films got more commercialized. The films started to focus less on social issues and started producing films as a means of providing the audience with an escape mechanism. Something that took their mind off reality, making them look away from their real-life issues.
This marked the beginning of Masala films in Bollywood and the transformation of Hindi films.
But how did the term Bollywood get coined?
There are many theories regarding how the word ‘Bollywood’ got coined, although it’s difficult to say for sure who came up with the name.
As the production of the number of Hindi films increased, it was noticed that many of them were greatly inspired by Hollywood films. The American film industry is called Hollywood as most of the American actors and filmmakers used to reside near the place called Hollywood. It’s a neighborhood in Los Angeles, California.
The 1940s to the 1960s is considered to be “The Golden Era” for Indian cinema due to the rising popularity of Bengali filmmakers like Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Mrinal Sen. The Bengali film industry was known as Tollywood because most of the films got produced in the Tollygunge area.
So, it was just a matter of time before someone coined the term Bollywood for Hindi cinema since most of the Hindi film industry was centered in Bombay.
This happens to be the most popularly accepted theory.
Amitabh Bachchan doesn’t like the name Bollywood
While Bollywood is the most preferred term used to address Hindi film industry by many within the industry, one actor who absolutely doesn’t like it is Amitabh Bachchan.
Explaining his hatred for the word Bollywood, Big B says,
“The Indian film industry is quite big, important and sufficient in itself to describe our industry. I don’t think we need to borrow any sentiments from other parts of the world to describe our cinema.”
Another theory is that the term “Bollywood” was first used by a writer for a film magazine in the 1970s.

Shocking! Janhvi Kapoor Speaks Out On Finding Her Morphed Photos On Inappropriate Sites As A Teen
Janhvi Kapoor is a name that resonates with the new wave of talent in the Hindi film industry. She is the oldest child of legendary actress Sridevi and movie producer Boney Kapoor. Despite being a star kid, she entered the Bollywood industry with a heritage as well as an unmistakable passion for acting.
She made her Bollywood debut in 2018 with the film Dhadak, a Hindi adaptation of the Marathi blockbuster Sairat. Although she was a debutante, her performance in the movie was widely praised for its originality and emotional range. The young actress exudes a natural charisma that draws admiration from critics and viewers alike and transcends the screen. Her sought-after presence and her ethereal beauty further boosted her as a style icon for the younger generation.
However, Janhvi Kapoor’s path in Bollywood hasn’t been without its share of difficulties. She was expected to perform well because she was the daughter of two prominent faces in the industry. It naturally led to comparisons to her late mother, Sridevi. Not only this, but she was the target of trolls who tried to malign her image in various ways. One way is posting her morphed pictures on inappropriate websites. Recently, Janhvi Kapoor addressed this problem and shared how she felt about it.
Janhvi Kapoor opens up about discovering her morphed images on pornographic websites
In an interview with Janhvi Kapoor gave an honest account of her childhood as a celebrity kid. Not only this, she also talked about the significant effects of the constant paparazzi culture on her. She highlighted how the ubiquitous cameras had been a permanent part of her life and upbringing.
But throughout her teenage years, when she came across altered and improper photographs of herself online, the intrusion became very unsettling. Speaking to Newslaundry, she expressed how there has been a surge in the creation of counterfeit images, particularly due to the advancements in today’s AI technology. Janhvi voiced grave worry, saying,
“People see these manipulated images and assume they’re real. That deeply concerns me.”
The actress went into further detail about how the digital revolution affected her early years. She recalled when, at the early age of 10, she found her paparazzi pictures on the internet while in school. With headlines announcing her impending foray into the film industry, these pictures showed her in an unflattering and raw light. This exposure had the reverse effect of making her more popular with her classmates, making her feel alienated and alone. She felt uncomfortable because of how her teachers also treated her differently. Speaking about this, she said,
“I don’t think they understood it, so they started disliking me. I didn’t understand what was happening. My friends looked at me differently, they poked fun at me for not getting waxed… Many insinuated that I don’t have to work as I was famous anyway, weird taunts that I wouldn’t understand. Everyone kept asking me when I was leaving school and why I was on Yahoo. There was a lot of judgment, a lot of questioning of one’s self-worth from a very young age.”
Despite encountering these early difficulties, Janhvi Kapoor has persisted in leaving a lasting impression on the entertainment sector. On a professional front, she has taken on a variety of roles after making her film debut in Dhadak, including Ghost Stories, Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, Good Luck Jerry (2022), and Bawaal (2023). She is scheduled to appear in a number of films, including Ulajh, Devara, and Mr. & Mrs. Mahi.

People Share Photos Of Their Mothers As Brides And It Reminds Us Of Simpler Times
Modern wedding ceremonies in India have evolved into spectacular spectacles characterized by luxury, sophisticated furnishings, and grandeur. Grooms plan big entrances, and caterers plan a food extravaganza with 500 dishes and 50 cuisines. Wedding venues have evolved into expansive locations that may accommodate 2,000 people. Destination weddings are also becoming more popular, with scenic countries like Turkey and the Maldives having witnessed many Indian weddings in the last few years. Even in India, people find royal cities such as Udaipur perfect for iconic weddings.
However, the one who always steals the limelight at every wedding is the bride. A modern bride confronts many challenges, such as during her wedding. It includes selecting a unique lehenga designed by renowned designers like Manish Malhotra and Sabyasachi. They also have to book makeup artists earlier and buy jewelry.
On the other hand, a look through your parents’ wedding photos reveals another kind of period. It was a period when weddings were mostly private events held in the comfortable surroundings of a person’s home. For guest accommodations, those with smaller homes chose community centers or nearby wedding halls. In contrast to the expensive outfits used today, the bride’s makeover was a family affair. Female relatives dressed her in modest and traditional clothing.
We can easily see this contrast with the recent trend that took over the internet. The trend started when some netizens started uploading wedding pictures of their mothers. Nostalgic photos uploaded online that depict moms as brides elegantly portray the simplicity of the past. These pictures show brides wearing sparse jewelry and sarees of different colors, deviating from the custom of wearing red all the time. The emphasis was not on flamboyance but on the sanctity of the ceremony and the joyous union of families.
While today’s weddings showcase a different aesthetic, the charm of the past lingers in these visual anecdotes, reminding us that the essence of matrimony transcends trends, finding beauty in both the opulent present and the simpler days of the past.
