Of course, the last season ends with more questions than answers, and you just have to find the release date of the upcoming season. So you google. And then you see it: there’s no new season. Your new obsession has been cancelled and your questions will never be answered.
It’s a disaster for many viewers out there, but cancelation of shows is a common practice in the industry. This holds true especially for Netflix, which is famous for cancelling shows after their 2nd or 3rd season due to an exponential increase in costs with each season. In this list, we discuss the best Netflix shows that deserve to be picked up again.
Dear White People
This politically themed show follows a group of outspoken black university students in navigating their college life. The show puts topics like racism and inequality in America to the forefront, which has made the show fairly popular and talked about among the American crowd. The show’s premise also naturally sparked a lot of discussion online, perhaps to the liking of the show’s writers.
The main character even hosts a Dear White People podcast – an important part of the series – in which she discusses various racial topics with her guests. Cancelled after four seasons, the show has gained a high rating among the critics for its daring approach and premise, making it disappointing that no season five will be in the works.
Santa Clarita Diet
This funny life-navigating zombie comedy features a real-estate couple trying to tackle the new changes in their daily life and marriage as Sheila, played by Drew Barrymore, becomes a zombie and starts exhibiting behavior changes along with human flash cravings. Together with her husband, Sheila works hard to navigate the new changes and the couple is determined to find a cure for Sheila so that everything can go back to normal.
Scoring an impressive overall rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, the show’s cancellation came as a shock to many fans of the show. This was true especially due to the increasing fanbase and critical acclaim it managed to receive with every season release. Although there have been speculations about a possible revival of the show, we believe this is, unfortunately, unlikely to happen.
Gypsy
Although this 2017 Netflix production failed to impress the critics, it was a massive hit with its viewers. This, however, was definitely not a result of the show’s execution, deemed by many critics as awful, but rather because of the LGBT fanbase which was smitten with the lesbian love story of the two polar-opposite women.
The show’s cancellation came just a few weeks after its release and was a result of Netflix’s too high ‘hit ratio’ – meaning that the streaming giant hasn’t cancelled enough shows and taken enough risk. Despite its lack of critical aclaim, we’re sad to this psychological thriller go.
The Society
This one-season show revolves around the high-schoolers of a small town returning from a field trip only to find out that the whole city is empty, everyone (including their parents) is gone, they can’t leave the city, and it seems like they are the only living souls on the planet.
The series deals with the hard adjustment of the teenagers to the new reality, forming a sort of a political system to establish structure in the society, and ultimately follows the characters on their way to finding out what happened. The show ends with the big question finally answered, leaving many fans, including us, wanting more. Cancelled after the first season, The Society joins the big list of shows that were cut due to the COVID pandemic.
Ozark
Marty and Wendy Byrde, along with their two teenage children, move to the Lake of Ozarks to execute a large money laundering scheme for a Mexican drug cartel – to launder $500 million in five years in an exchange for their lives. They successfully continue to do so with the help of a riverboat casino, which Marty sees as a perfect money laundering machine. The show is following the struggles of the family to accomplish the mind-blowing task of laundering a sum of money larger than some of the biggest lottery jackpots combined, all while trying not to be busted by the officials in the process.
With the show’s last episodes being released in late April 2022, we are already saying our goodbyes to this suspense-filled-Breaking-Bad type of show, wishing we could at least get one more season. However, the last one promises even more drama, problems, conflicts, and even a second money laundering casino – and we’re here for it.
Designated Survivor
After a terrorist attack successfully kills the president of the United States, although being 11th in the line of succession, because of the scope of the attack killing almost everyone in the room, Tom Kirkman is forced to take his place as the appointed designated survivor and he becomes the new president of the United States.
As the episodes go by, it’s clear that his appointment to the function was planned and he was believed to serve as an easy puppet – something which did certainly not go as planned. The show offers a believable look into the issues of democracy, terrorism, protection of peace, and offers a thrilling ride full of government conspiracies and explosions. Cancelled after three successful seasons because of issues with contracts after Netflix picked up the series from ABC, Designated Survivor undoubtedly deserves to be featured on our list.
Bonding
When Tiff becomes a dominatrix, she asks her best friend Pete to become her partner in crime. And to make things more interesting: Pete’s gay. With only 15 minutes per episode, Bonding follows two best friends on a wild journey of the world of BDSM.
The two seasons are filled with excellent humor and punchlines that will make you crack up with laughter. Although it’s a shame the show didn’t dive into the topic of BDSM more, it certainly started a discussion and took a lot of its stigma away. Bonding is your perfect show to binge-watch in a few hours whenever you feel like you just want something light. But be ready to be left longing for more…
